Product Description

Andrew Erskine follows the course and character of Roman expansion during the Republic and Early Empire. He concentrates on the impact of Roman rule on the subject and the effect of empire on imperial power, topics that have long been controversial among modern scholars. Views on Roman imperialism have traditionally been informed by contemporary perceptions of international power relations& mdash;one reason students engage with the subject so readily.

This is a collection of illustrations, sketches and photos from Japanese tattoo master, Horimasa. A tebori artist by trade (the traditional Japanese method of tattooing by hand) Horimasa breathes new life into fundamental Japanese tattoo motifs in this compilation. That he’s studied the masters of traditional ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) is evident in his work and his approach to traditional Japanese iconography is bold and confident. His lines are incredibly clean and color use is brilliant. This book includes a wide variety of Japanese traditional tattoo imagery. It features a variety of samurai, Gods and Goddesses, oni, goblins, tigers, Hannya, dragons, geisha, koi, foo dogs, animals and insects….it has a little bit of everything. It includes full color, full pages illustrations, complete single line drawings, preliminary sketches and sketches devoted to particularly tricky details, like hands, feet, eyes and claws. It also includes a 50 full page, full color photo section of Horimasa’s tattoo work, shot by world renowned photographer Geoff Johnson. This book is nice a big, printed on thick, high quality paper and comes in a cardboard slipcase for protection. It is an amazing resource for anyone interested in traditional Japanese tattooing and imagery.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Homo sapiens have remained the same species, largely unchanged in genetic makeup and anatomy since the Cro-Magnon era. By contrast, the cultural, social, and technological changes since then have been nothing less than extraordinary. At the core of this development is the ability of humans to store and transmit knowledge, so that each new generation stands upon the shoulders of its predecessors. This ability to use what has gone before is what sets humans apart.

Telling our story, from prehistory to the present day, DK’s History is a thought-provoking journey, revealing the common threads and forces that have shaped human history. Taking a broad-themed approach, acknowledging varied factors at work, from climate, ecology, disease, and geology and their roles in the human story, this visual celebration makes history accessible and relevant, putting events in their wider context and showing how they have shaped the world we live in.

Product Description

This is the definitive, 4.4 million year-old story of human history – from the origins of mankind to the 21st century, spanning the globe and based on the latest research, the complete story of the people, events, themes, ideas and forces that have shaped human existence. Find out about our history’s turning points: eye witness accounts and biographies give a personal angle to major events. Explore humankind’s legacy from architecture and artefacts to the big ideas that have changed our world. Examine the effect we’ve had on nature and vice versa. And discover how the past has been unlocked: from interpreting ancient documents to analysing ice cores. This book is a compelling look at human existence: perfect for the family bookshelf. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title

Once you start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, there’s no turning back. This debut thriller–the first in a trilogy from the late Stieg Larsson–is a serious page-turner rivaling the best of Charlie Huston and Michael Connelly. Mikael Blomkvist, a once-respected financial journalist, watches his professional life rapidly crumble around him. Prospects appear bleak until an unexpected (and unsettling) offer to resurrect his name is extended by an old-school titan of Swedish industry. The catch–and there’s always a catch–is that Blomkvist must first spend a year researching a mysterious disappearance that has remained unsolved for nearly four decades. With few other options, he accepts and enlists the help of investigator Lisbeth Salander, a misunderstood genius with a cache of authority issues. Little is as it seems in Larsson’s novel, but there is at least one constant: you really don’t want to mess with the girl with the dragon tattoo. –Dave Callanan

In the first of a dazzling series, Mary Jo Putney introduces the Lost Lords-maverick childhood friends with a flair for defying convention. Each is about to discover the woman who is his perfect match-but perfection doesn’t come easily, even for the noble Duke of Ashton. . .

Battered by the sea, Adam remembers nothing of his past, his ducal rank, nor of the shipwreck that almost claimed his life. However, he’s delighted to hear that the golden-haired vision tending his wounds is his wife. Mariah’s name and face may not be familiar, but her touch, her warmth, feel deliciously right. . .

When Mariah Clarke prayed for a way to deter a bullying suitor, she didn’t imagine she’d find the answer washed ashore on a desolate beach. Convincing Adam that he is her husband is surprisingly easy. Resisting the temptation to act his wife, in every way, will prove anything but. And now a passion begun in fantasy has become dangerously real-and completely irresistible. . .

“Intoxicating, romantic and utterly ravishing…”-Eloisa James

Starred Review. What perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn’s new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who’s raised 17 children, and Aibileen’s best friend Minny, who’s found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams. Assured and layered, full of heart and history, this one has bestseller written all over it. (Feb.)
