Product Description

Family violence is a complex phenomenon. It is often reciprocal between the adult partners, and sometimes initiated by the children upon their parents and each another. Males and females, and parents and children can be perpetrators or victims in varying degrees. Over the past decade, many domestic violence experts have acknowledged the usefulness of couples and family therapy as an effective way to assess and treat family violence, while still ensuring the safety and accountability of all family members.

This casebook showcases a wide variety of couples and families who have encountered violence, and the different therapeutic approaches used to treat them. The families discussed in these cases vary in their composition, geographic location, ethnic and socioeconomic status, and mental health issues. The case authors come from a wide range of fields, including social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and psychiatry. The approaches they use include cognitive-behavioral, family systems, feminist, problem-solving, and many others.

What all these cases do have in common is that they demonstrate the complexity of assessing family violence and disentangling its multiple underlying causes. Each account includes a thorough description of the assessment procedure, treatment goals and reasons for selecting a particular approach (with a particular consideration of client safety), and an account of the course of treatment. Each study also ends with questions for discussion, making the cases perfect for use in a graduate course.

The book is primarily intended for mental health professionals and graduate students in the fields of family therapy, counseling, and family violence; but will also be of value to anyone in the field of family violence and those concerned with domestic violence public policy, prevention, and intervention.

Product Description

Understand and make use of the connections between health and religion to improve your practice!

Research points to a clear link between people’s religious beliefs and practices and their health. These developments have ushered in a new era in health care, in which meaning and purpose stand alongside biology as vital factors in health outcomes. Now the gap is closing between medicine and religion, as evidenced by the more than 60 US medical school courses now being given in spirituality, religion, and medicine, including courses at major teaching centers such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Case-Western, and others.

Faith, Spirituality, and Medicine: Toward the Making of the Healing Practitioner promotes the integration of spirituality into medical care by exploring the connection between patient health and traditional religious beliefs and practices. This useful guide emphasizes basic, easily understood principles that will help health professionals apply current research findings linking religion, spirituality, and health.

Product Description

The most highly respected environmental assessment in the healthcare field — with all-new content for 2007 — is the tool you need to guide your organization’s strategic planning. Loaded with information that will help your organization ask the right questions, the 2007 edition of Futurescan identifies trends in eight key areas and, just as important, what those trends mean for hospital leaders. Experts and their topics include: Noted futurist Jeff Goldsmith on the impact of the baby boomers’ retirement; Karen Davis, president of the Commonwealth Fund, on the erosion of comprehensive health insurance and access to care; Helen Darling, president of the National Business Group on Health, on what employers are thinking; Bill McGinly, president of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, on hospitals’ growing reliance on giving; Thomas Royer, MD, CEO of CHRISTUS Health, on the state of physician-hospital relationships; Janet Corrigan and Cara Lesser of the National Quality Forum on quality as a strategic imperative; Lawton Burns of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania on the challenges posed by the proliferation of clinical technology; and Tom Priselac and Darren Dworkin of Cedars-Sinai Health System on the promise of the electronic medical record.
