Product Description

Staging and grading are indispensable in analyzing the severity of a disease, therapeutic measures and estimation of quality of life. This is the first book to give a comprehensive overview of all the relevant staging and grading references in the complete gastrointestinal field.Aimed at professionals in gastroenterology, general and gastrointestinal surgeons, pediatricians, hepatologists, basic researchers, biomedical industry, nurse practitioners etc., at any level of competence, this work includes explanatory comments, providing an ideal guide into the myriad of gradings, providing a uniquely complete overview of the field. The quality is enhanced by the careful selection of the different gradings and the exactness and correctness of the references. In the era of evidence-based medicine, there are many studies comparing different therapeutic strategies, many of which use grading and staging systems that were previously published (but are not included in the papers). This book contains all the relevant grading and scales of the field which are necessary to correctly understand these papers. Thus it serves as a valuable reference for all readers, and for all physicians setting up research trials. The many high quality line drawings, endoscopic, radiologic and histologic illustrations clarify the various items when appropriate, again underlining the uniqueness of this work.

Product Description

Evidence-Based Gastroenterology provides a synthesis of evidence-based literature from the field of gastroenterology. Written by an international panel of world-renowned experts, it highlights the most important clinical issues currently facing gastroenterologists. The authors illustrate how they systematically assembled and critically assessed the evidence pertaining to a specific disease. They show how to apply that evidence to problem solving in daily clinical practice. Supporting evidence is graded using a three-point scale and then further divided into five subcategories. This grading method enables the reader to rapidly identify the optimal approach for specific patient management. What sets Evidence-Based Gastroenterology apart from others in the field is that it allows the reader to see how evidence has been gathered and appraised, and how it may be applied in the clinical setting. Evidence-Based Gastroenterology is an extremely valuable resource for those concerned with the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of the variety of disorders. It will help identify important points and serves as a guide for future research in gastroenterology.

Product Description

Zinc has an important role in human physiology due to its involvement in numerous enzymatic reactions and its other functions as part of hormones and structural proteins. As a consequence a wide variety of symptoms may occur in different states of zinc deficiency. Several diseases of the digestive tract can lead to zinc deficiency and consequently to deficiency symptoms. This book, the proceedings of an International Falk Workshop held in Freiburg, Germany, on 27 October 1996, aims at a dialogue between basic researchers and gastroenterologists in order to improve the understanding of the role of zinc in disorders of the digestive tract. Based on lectures on the role of zinc in cell biology, the pathophysiology of zinc deficiency and consequently the possibilities of zinc substitution in these disorders is discussed. It is hoped that this book will initiate fruitful discussions and collaborations leading to a better knowledge of the role of this trace element in gastroenterology.

Product Description

The liver is the largest organ in the body and plays a vital role in regulating life processes. Each year more than 25 million Americans are afflicted with liver and gall bladder diseases, and more than 27,000 die of cirrhosis. Experts believe that more than half of all liver diseases could be prevented.

Liver Disorders Sourcebook contains basic consumer health information about the liver, how it works, and how to keep it healthy through diet, vaccination, and other preventive care measures. Readers will learn about the symptoms and treatment options for such diseases as hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, Wilson’s disease, hemochromatosis, liver failure, cancer of the liver, and disorders related to drugs and other toxins. Also included are a glossary and directories of support groups and additional resources.

Product Description

T Lymphocytes in the Liver is the first book to offer a comprehensive review of the newly understood relationship between the liver and the immune system. This edited volume examines the immunobiology of T cells – the way their behavior in the liver differs from that in other organs, and, conversely, the liver’s ability to effect changes in the activity of such immune cells. A number of relevant, cutting-edge issues are considered, including vaccine development, the liver’s potential role in autoimmune tissue damage, tolerance and transplant rejection, and the use of animal organs for human patients. Contributing authors from diverse specialties discuss topics including:
* T cells expressing antigen receptors in the liver
* Active T cells in the liver
* Extrathymic T cells in the liver
* The induction of peripheral tolerance by portal vein administration of antigen
* The immunobiology of viral hepatitis
* Immunity to Listeria monocytogenes infection of the liver
* Malaria and the liver
* T cells and autoimmune liver disease
* Hepatic T cells in primary sclerosing cholangitis and autoimmune hepatitis.

Product Description

The aim of this book is to present a unique compilation of lectures given by international speakers at the Hammersmith Hospital during the recent Meetings in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Transplantation.

New therapeutical approaches, advances in oncology and in diagnostic imaging, which reduce the need for invasive techniques and reach an improvement in survival and quality of life in cancer, are considered in this book. Modern literature has been reviewed with special reference to articles of general interest. In the clinical management of patients with liver, bile duct and pancreas diseases, it is important to assess the degree of disturbance and to diagnose the causative insult, and therefore clinical and laboratory methods of assessing each of these pathologies are of high interest.

This version is an up-to-date account of diseases of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas, including transplantation, which we trust will be of value for surgeons, physicians and pathologists and also a reference book for medical students.

Product Description

This second edition of Nuclear Hepatology: A Textbook of Hepatobiliary Diseases has been revised so as to encompass all of the most recent developments in the field. The result is a comprehensive, up-to-date book that will serve as a ready reference and a clinical and procedural guide. The authors, both of whom are nuclear medicine physicians, present nuclear hepatobiliary imaging techniques in the context of the many other possible diagnostic studies, thereby acquainting the reader with the role of these procedures. Throughout, care is taken to maintain a clear clinical focus and to emphasize the importance of integrating information on morphology and quantitative physiology as the basis for diagnosis. Each of the chapters is well illustrated and referenced. This book will prove invaluable not only to nuclear medicine physicians but also to practitioners of radiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, gastroenterology, hepatology, primary care, general surgery, and liver transplantation surgery.
