Product Description

Coagulation testing is the basis for the diagnosis of bleeding and thrombotic disorders, as well as the mainstay of anti-coagulant monitoring and management. The laboratory director requires significant expertise to manage the coagulation laboratory. This expertise includes the selection, validation and harmonization of analyzer/reagent combinations across health care organizations that often include physician offices, point of care testing, hospital laboratories and shared core laboratories.

Pathologists are often responsible for managing a healthcare system’s coagulation testing, yet the basics of managing a coagulation laboratory are inadequately addressed in many, if not most, pathology residency training programs. In addition, there is no textbook to which residents or practicing pathologists can refer for assistance. The same can be said for medical technologists or non-pathologist clinicians who find themselves in charge of a coagulation laboratory.

This handbook will address the need among practicing pathologists, laboratory supervisors/managers, pathology trainees and clinicians for a straightforward reference for managing a hemostasis laboratory and coordinating testing across multiple locations and technologies. The handbook format will allow quick reference to specific topics and be useful for answering specific questions or for Board exam review. The full spectrum of coagulation testing, basics of methodology and instrumentation, and the responsibilities of the laboratory director will be covered.

Product Description

The Lecture Notes series is ideal for medical students, junior doctors and other allied health professionals. Lecture Notes: Haematology concentrates on providing the required core subject knowledge and has been extensively revised and updated to reflect the considerable advances in the understanding of the molecular biology and pathogenesis of haematological disorders, while continuing the tradition of successfully integrating the physiological, pathological and clinical aspects of haematology.

Each chapter begins with a list of learning objectives that identifies the key elements that students need to know, whilst also taking learning to the next level. This new edition includes brief sections on the approaches to investigation and treatment of haematological problems, the underlying mechanisms and relationships concerning lymphomas and other neoplastic diseases of the bone marrow, and the rapidly changing area of bone marrow transplantation.

Illustrated in full colour throughout, with new illustrations and photographs of important normal and abnormal blood cells, this eighth edition is a comprehensive guide to haematology and an essential aid for anyone who wants a concise introduction to the subject.

Product Description

The mouse has become a standard laboratory model organism, particularly for the study of hematopoiesis, the immune system, and inflammation. Although laboratories studying stem cells, blood, and blood-forming tissues have assimilated many new molecular diagnostic methods, the identification of cell lineages through classical light microscopic techniques is often poorly understood and practiced. Mouse Hematology presents a concise review of conventional methods for the preparation, enumeration, and microscopic examination of blood and blood-forming tissues of the laboratory mouse. Along with a short laboratory manual featuring detailed protocols, Mouse Hematology includes a DVD of short video demonstrations of the techniques and a poster of blood cell types for easy identification at the microscope. These rapid, inexpensive assessments can save valuable time and resources essential to the design, development, and interpretation of experiments.

Product Description

Transferring hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells has continued to be a promising therapeutic alternative and a fascinating area of cell biology as well as a field of persistent procedural problems. This explains why substantial parts of basic research on cell growth and differentiation, immune tolerance and antitumor effects, gene transfer, minimal residual disease and supportive care have settled around clinical transplantation in hematology and oncology. This second volume updates the current role of allogeneic and autologous transplantation in leukemias, lymphomas and solid cancers, including controversial strategies and novel experimental approaches. Outstanding representatives of leading groups guarantee first-hand information and indicate how we can work and cooperate more effectively to the benefit of our patients.

Product Description

Reinhold Munker and his distinguished colleagues have updated and expanded Modern Hematology: Biology and Clinical Management, now in its second edition, to reflect the major advances in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of blood disorders. Modern Hematology: Biology and Clinical Management, Second Edition describes the latest clinical and scientific developments, including molecular studies used to diagnose a variety of hematological disorders and guide their treatment. Targeted and molecular therapies are discussed in detail, including kinase inhibitors in myeloproliferative disorders and humanized monoclonal antibodies. The use of peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood stem cells for transplantation is described, as well as the rationale and indications for non-myeloablative transplantation, emphasizing the preferability of immunotherapy over cytotoxic chemotherapy.

Modern Hematology: Biology and Clinical Management, Second Edition brings together facts, concepts, and protocols important for the practice of hematology. In 23 chapters, all major blood diseases are covered, as well as rare diseases that are of scientific interest. The first two chapters introduce the reader to the scientific basis of blood disorders. As in the previous edition, each chapter is illustrated by tables, figures, and a selection of color plates. Experts in pediatric hematology, myeloma, blood transfusion, hemoglobinopathies, pharmacology, and infectious diseases have expanded the scope of Modern Hematology.

Comprehensive and informative, Modern Hematology: Biology and Clinical Management, Second Edition is an invaluable resource for medical students, hematology trainees, residents, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians in other specialties treating patients with benign and malignant blood disorders.

Product Description

A comprehensive survey of the current state-of-the-art in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for malignant disease. The authors focus on the indications and results of transplantation for acute leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and breast cancer. Special attention is given to transplant-related complications, including the pathophysiology and clinical consequences of acute and chronic GVHD, delayed immune reconstitution leading to infectious complications, and organ damage to the lung and liver. Additional chapters address the sources of stem cells and the effects of graft manipulation used to eliminate residual contaminating tumor cells in autologous transplantation, or to reduce the number of T lymphocytes causing GVHD in allogenic transplantation.

This issue contains a comprehensive review of the most relevant information about targeted therapies, including preclinical studies as well as clinical trials that are ongoing. Attention is given to the main Tirosine Kinase inhibitors, such as anti-EGFR and multitargeted therapies. The newly developed therapies against intracellular pathways responsible for the tumor phenotype (mTOR inhibitors, farnesyltransferase inhibitors, and heat sock protein inhibitors) are also presented. This information is important because these new drugs are being tested in the clinical setting.
